LIBERAL VICTORY

SPOKESMAN FOR CANADA. E . RECENT PROVINCIAL ELECTION. z . There is a most stirring human story behind the sweeping victory of the Liberals in the provincial election held ,s at the end of October in Quebec, says ,r “Atticus,” writing in the “Sunday h Times." That victory is supremely a r. vote for Empire solidarity, loyalty to the Crown and a united effort to attain j victory in the war. The organiser, and h indeed the architect, of the electoral triumph is Mr Ernest Lapointe, Minister of Justice in the Federal Adminis- ’■ tration at Ottawa. Mr Lapointe has - all the eloquence and fire of his race, it las is proved by the following excerpts el from his speech at the outbreak of war:—“l hate war with all my heart I, and conscience. But devotion to peace l’ does not mean ignorance or blindness, j • • • England has worked for peace. I know it. It is a base calumny to say that England is responsible for anys thing that has led to the present coni flict. France has worked continually ; for peace, and it is a slander to say , that France is responsible in any way ; for the conflict. These nations have gone so far in their efforts to preserve ? peace that they have been the subject of strong and bitter criticism on the part of many people in their respective ' countries because of what was called ' with derision the appeasement policy. I desire to conclude my remarks by referring to what was said by our gracious Queen at Halifax when she was leaving Canada to return to the Homeland. Her words in French went to the heart of every man, woman and ' child in my Province of Quebec. She said: ‘Que Dieu benisse de Canada.’ ' God bless Canada. Yes, God bless Canada. God save Canada. God save . Canada’s honour, Canada’s soul, Ca- ■ nada’s conscience. God give Canadians ' the light which will indicate to them ( where their duty lies in this hour of > trial, so that our children and our children’s children may inherit a land j where freedom and peace shall pre- j vail, where our social, political and re- j ligious institutions may be secure and c from which the tyrannical doctrines of 4 Nazism and Communism are for ever banished. Yes. God bless Canada. God bless our Queen. God bless our King.” J-
