SPELL OF DRY WEATHER
• ♦ COMES TO SUDDEN END. RAIN FALLS IN CANTERBURY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH. This Day. Canterbury’s long spell of dry weather came to a sudden end in the early hours of this morning when heavy rain was experienced in the city and in most parts of the province, the downpour lasting until about nine o’clock last night. The weather was warm and fine, which gave no warning of the storm at 9 a.m., however just under an inch of rain had fallen, and considerable flooding was evidenced in many city streets. For the most part the rain was enthusiastically welcomed. It was badly needed for pastures while it came at the right time for the filling out of the wheat before the harvesting season. The only place where serious ' flooding occurred was at the new overhead bridge at Rakaia. There was so much water on the north side early this morning that cars were unable to get through.
