Police, heavily reinforced, drew their batons and scattered the disturbers, some of whom exchanged blows or were trampled underfoot. The uniforms of three constables were slashed with a razor blade. Three arrests were made. A youthful Communist orator later became a target for a fusillade of tomatoes. most of which landed on the Sunday suits of those surging round him.
