TRAGIC HOTEL FIRE
TWENTY-THREE GUESTS TRAPPED. SEVERAL PERSONS PERISH. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. BRISBANE. December 24. A tragic hotel lire occurred at Goomeri, 171 miles north-west from Brisbane, early yesterday morning, when nine persons perished. Twenty-three guests were trapped in the upper story of the Grand Hotel, a large two-storied weatherboard building. Most of them tried to escape over the balcony, and two were killed leaping to the road. Several were caught by men waiting below, including an 18-months'-old boby, whose mother, after crying out, “Save my baby!” was herself overcome by smoke and disappeared in the flames. The licensee, Mr John Parker, died from burns, and other injuries after jumping to the bitumen road. His wife was burned to death, also a barmaid, and a girl telephonist. It is feared that others may be under the debris.
