The howling of air raid sirens drowned Christmas bells and residents spent most daylight hours underground as one alarm after another drove theip to cover. No bombs appeared to fall inside the city but distant detonations indicated that the suburbs were probably hit. WAR SUPPLIES FINNISH OFFICER VISITS WASHINGTON. HOPES OF SECURING ARMS. WASHINGTON, December 22. The Finnish artillery chief, Lieuten-ant-General Villio P. Nenonen, arrived today. The War Department is arranging for his visits to arms plants, as a result of which Finland hopes to obtain large quantities of war supplies. He declared that the Soviet manpower must be effective eventually if Finland did not get arms and ammunition to enable conservation of her own manpower. PUPPET GOVERNMENT RUSSIANS ARREST LEADER. HELSINKI, December 23. The Russians have arrested M. Kuusinen, the leader of the Russian puppet government at Terijoki. JOINT PROTEST ATTITUDE OF AMERICAN COUNTRIES. WARS OF CONQUEST LIKELY TO BE CONDEMNED. NEW YORK, December 23. The Rio de Janiero correspondent of the "New York Times" says that the Pan-American States’ joint protest against the invasion of Finland is likely to be released before the new year. The American committee on neutrality will meet at Rio de Janeiro on January 15, and it is expected it will pass a resolution condemning wars of conquest.
