TOLL OF THE MOTOR
SEVERAL FATALITIES TWO YOUNG MEN KILLED. COLLISION ON HILL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND. December 25. Two young men were killed instantly when the motor-cycle they were riding up Mellon’s Hill, on the Howick highway, about two miles north of Pakuranga, this morning collided with a five-seater car, none of the occupants of which was seriously injured. The motor-cycle was a twisted wreck. Substantial damage was done to the front of the car, and there was a jagged hole about a foot in diameter in the windscreen, against which had struck the head of the motor-cycle driver. The victims were: Mr John Eastwood, labourer, Newton. aged about 23. Mr John A. Wallace, gardener. Opawa, Christchurch, aged about 24. The car was being driven from the city to Buckland’s Beach by Mr William Walmsley, with whom were his wife and Mr and Mrs J Birchall and their five-year-old son, all of the same address. It is believed that the motorcycle was ridden by Mr Eastwood and that the pillion rider was Mr Wallace, both of whom were staying at the Bible class camp at Buckland’s Beach. They had left the camp not long before and were going toward the city. CAR GOES OVER CLIFF. LORRY DRIVER DIES FROM INJURIES. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) GISBORNE. December 25. One man was fatally injured and his companion was injured in the early hours of Sunday morning, when their car left the road and shot over a 400 ft cliff into Kakkoura Creek. The victims were:— KILLED. Leslie Trevor Moore, aged 23, single, lorry-driver, Tiniroto. INJURED. Leonard Naylor, aged 45, station hand, Tiniroto. The accident occurred 35 miles from Gisborne on the Gisborne Wairoa, via Tiniroto, highway. The men had spent Saturday evening in Gisborne and were returning home to Tiniroto when the accident occurred. Mr Moore died in hospital. Naylor is not seriously hurt. YOUTH KILLED AT ONEHUNGA. MAORI CHARGED WITH INTOXICATION. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND. December 23. A motor-cyclist, Mr George William Duncan, aged 20, was killed when his machine, collided with a car in Onehunga. Michael Walsh, aged 13, who was on the_pillion. received concussion and a fractured ankle, and his condition is serious. As a sequel, a Maori was charged in the Magistrates’ Court with having been intoxicated in charge of a motor car and was remanded till next Friday. WOMAN HIT BY TRAILER. SUCCUMBS IN HOSPITAL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WANGANUI, December 25. Fatal injuries were received by a Maori woman when she was struck by a motor-trailer when walking along the main highway at Nukumaru on' Saturday afternoon. The victim was Mrs Temaaha Hikeroa, of Waitotara. ■ Mrs Hikeroa received severe head injuries and was taken to Wanganui Hospital, where she died yesterday.
