DRIVE WITH CARE
APPEAL TO MOTORISTS. SOME HOLIDAY ADVICE. An appeal to motorists to take special care during the approaching holiday period was made today by Mr W. G. Milne, traffic inspector in Masterton. Mr Milne said that all roads would be carrying a heavy volume of traffic in the Wairarapa during the holidays. One of the most important safety measures that motorists can take during the holidays is to cut down their speeding. A car travelling at 60 miles per hour requires per mile at least twice as much petrol as a car travelling at 40 miles an hour. If motorists resolve to travel at a safe speed and to hurry before they start, they will not only be helping to keefci down accidents, but they will also be conserving petrol. A safe speed will also help motorists to keep on their correct side of the centre line. A few r “don’ts” will remind drivers of their responsibilities, said Mr Milne: Don’t cut corners. Don’t drive at a high speed. Don’t forget to give way to traffic on right. Don’t attempt to overtake another vehicle without at least 300 feet of clear road ahead. Don’t cut in when overtaking another vehicle. Don’t park near corners or so as to obstruct the free flow of traffic. Don’t forget to signal your intention to turn or stop. Don’t hold up traffic on narrow roads. Pull in to the side and signal the following cars to pass. Traffic will be congested to and from the race meetings and those desiring to attend will be advised to travel early in order to avoid the last-minute rush at the gates. The most important meetings to local sportsmen are the Manawatu races on December 26 and 27. and the Tauherenikau races on December 30 and January 1.
