MAURICEVILLE

SOLDIERS FAREWELLED FIRST FROM THE DISTRICT. (“Times-Age” Special.) A most successful gathering was held by the residents of Mauriceville and the surrounding districts to bid farewell to Privates K. Roigard and C. Clarke, who will leave with the First Echelon of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. The hall was gay with decorations, a strong patriotic note being in evidence. Dancing was enjoyed by all present. Mr E. W. Cheetham (chairman) in a few well chosen words, congratulated the boys on being the first to leave the district on service with the army, and in presenting each of them with a handsome wristlet watch, wished them a safe journey and a speedy return to New Zealand. Mr M. Welch and Mr I. Larsen, on behalf of the Opaki Football Club, presented the guests- with a safety razor each. The recipients suitably responded. Music was supplied by Minifle’s Orchestra, and Mr J. Bain very capably carried out the duties of M.C. Supper was served by the ladies under the capable supervision of Mrs J. McArley. The singing of "Auld Lang Syne” brought to a close one of the most enjoyable gatherings yet held in Mauriceville.
