The Bridge of St. Louis, linking the city and islands in the River Seine, collapsed. A number of cars and pedestrians were plunged into the river. The bridge disappeared. Seven were recovered from the river. Two later succumbed. Thirteen are missing. The collapse was due to the impact of the steel barge Tunisie, the captain of which was seriously injured. Two broken gas pipes caused an explosion.
