Messrs R. Morrison (Dannevirke), L. Hay and Sladden (Wellington) are Empire Hotel guests today. Mr F. C. Bunny has been re-elected chairman of the Greytown Fruitgrowing Company. In connection with the University of New Zealand examinations in the diploma of banking section, Mr Brian J. Roache, of Masterton, passed in commercial and banking law 11. Gunner Davis-Goff, a son of Mr W. F. Davis-Goff, of Masterton, is a member of the crew of H.M.S. Achilles, which distinguished itself in the action against the German pocket-battleship Graf Spee. Mr and Mrs F. W. Hood and Miss M. Hood, of Greytown, left today on a visit to Auckland. While there they will attend the birthday of Mr F. H. Wood, a former Mayor of Greytown, who will be 90 years of age on Monday. Mr C. V. Fordham, who has been an officer of the Native Department for 29 years and Registrar of the Native Land Court. Wellington, since 1926. has been promoted to the position of Registrar of the Court at Rotorua, probably the largest of the department’s offices. Mr Lyell Thornton, of Masterton. who had enlisted with the Special Force some time ago and is attached to the Transport Section, is spending his final leave in Masterton prior to leaving for active service overseas with the First Echelon of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Among those who passed in connection with the recent University of New Zealand accountancy examinations was Lieut. I. Hart. L I ,'M. of 'Masterton. who thus completed Ins A F. degree. Ills success is all the mor-' creditable because he sat for his filial examination while engaged in duties in the camp of the Special New Zealand Military Force. Two members of the staff of the Masterton Railway Station will shortly enter the Air Signals Corps at Levin. Mr R. Y. Morrison left for his home in Invercargill yesterday, prior to entering camp, and Mr Bruce Hunter will leave Masterton today for his home in Hastings, where he will spend a short holiday before entering eamp on December 29. The death occurred at Wanganui yesterday of Mr C. W. Lee. at the age of 86 years. The late Mr Lee was a member of the teaching profession, and had been headmaster at the Martinborough and Pahiatua schools, retiring about 25 years ago. He was held in high esteem for his many personal qualities and a wide circle of friends will learn with feelings of deep regret of his death. Mrs Lee predeceased him four years ago, and he leaves a son (Mr Raymand Lee, of Masterton) and a daughter (Mrs C. Goldsbury, of Wanganui).
