GREYTOWN

SOLDIER FAREWELLS STRONG COMMITTEE FORMED. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Mayor (Mr A. W. Horton) presided over the meeting held in the Council Chambers last evening when a strong committee was formed to arrange farewell functions to soldiers from Greytown and surrounding district. The following committee was elected;—Messrs A. W. Horton (chairman). W. A. Tate, J. F. Thompson, E. Maddison, J. Kiernan, H. G. Carter, S. C. Shedden. G. Robinson, G. Te Whaiti. A. Johnson, R. Dyson, J. W. Barnard. H. Manihera, Mesdames Horton. Brown, Vale, Stevens. Haigh. Johnson. Maddison, Harris, Jury. Misses Tate. Eagar, Kidd. Messrs G. Robinson and S. C. Shedden were appointed joint secretaries. It was decided, to ask all residents of the district to become members. Apologies were received from a number of local residents, all expressing their desire to assist. The next farewell function will be held on Tuesday night when Messrs R. Richards, Bob Stevens, A. Grigg and R. Connolly will be the guests of the committee. The committee decided to have one farewell for each draft when on final leave. The chairman explained the conditions governing these functions as laid down by the Government.

BOWLING LOCAL COMPETITIONS Greytown will send two rinks to Masterton to take part in the New Year tournament. In the local singles competition H. J. Nightingale beat H. B. Wallace; H. Rees beat H. G. Carter; J. Shedden beat 11. Rees. Late Shopping Night. The Greytown shops will observe tonight as the late shopping night. Most of the shops have been decorated with greenery, and coloured lights have been placed across the shopping area. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs S. C. Shedden and Miss Betty Shedden have left to spend the holidays at Lyall Bay. Mr and Mrs E. G. Thomas and family are the guests of Mr H. Walden. McMaster Street. ■ Mr and Mrs M. Whimp, of Kuratawhiti Street, have gone to Wellington for the school holidays.
