BASIS OF VICTORY
BEING SLOWLY BUT SURELY LAID LORD CHATFIELD'S SURVEY. THE ALLIED PEACE AIMS. “The reason why the Germans have not launched any large-scale land or air attacks is because they are not confident of their success. They hoped to break the British blockade of the sea, but actually the British Navy is slowly but surely laying the foundations for ultimate victory,” said Lord Chatfield, Minister for Co-ordination of Defence, in a broadcast talk from Daventry yesterday. Fighting efficiency was Britain’s surest and most reliable weapon, he said. So far the army had not been called on to any marked extent, but it well might be that the finial victory would rest with the land forces. Speaking of peace aims. Lord Chatfield said it was desired that a Europe should be created where nations like Poland could not be torn asunder nor another Finland be attacked by a covetous neighbour.
