CENTENNIAL STAMPS
SPECIAL ISSUE IN GREAT DEMAND. The Centennial postage stamp issue. which will be on sale on January 2. promises to be in great demand, according to postal authorities in Wellington. The set comprises .12 stamps, which feature selected subjects representing various phases of New Zea- ' land’s historical and industrial development from the arrival of the Maori about 1350. up to the present day. In the specially prepared booklet issued and compiled by the Post and Telegraph Department of New Zealand the dejailed descriptions of the 12 stamps are well presented. It is pointed out in the booklet that, in order to follow the historical theme, the stamps should be grouped as follows:—(1) Arrival of the Maoris, Id stamp; (2) Maori Council. 7d stamp; <3l Tasman’s .discovery of New Zealand. 2d stamp; (4) Cook’s rediscovery of New Zealand, Id stamp; (5) Landing of New Zealand Company’s immigrants on Petone Beach, 3d stamp; 161 Treaty of Waitangi, 21d stamp: (7) Hoisting of British Flag at Akaroa. 5d stamp; (8) Period of gold mining, fid stamp; HI) First shipment of frozen mutton, 6d stamp; (10) Progress of: transport. 4d stamp; Hl) One hundred years under the British Crown. Ud stamp; (12) Giant Kauri. Is stamp. I "Maori ornamentation and articles of I ancient Maori use and adornment, evid-l ence of a native culture of which New | Zealanders, both Maori and pakeha. are justly proud, have been used in' I the border work."
