CARTERTON

CENTENNIAL BATHS MEETING OF COMMITTEE. ("Times-Age” Special.) A meeting o the committee of the Carterton Borough and Wairarapa South County in connection with the Centennial Memorial Baths proposal was held in the Borough Council Chambers last evening. The Mayor. Mi- D. L. Taverner, presided and there were also present: Messrs J. B. Lawrence, J. Steel, F. Taplin, L. Fairbrother and Councillors L. Gallon, C. J. DeLacey, and W. Wolters. Apologies for absence were received from Councillors E. McKenzie, A. E. Reid and Messrs R. P. Wakelih, H. Matson and E. Wilkins. Correspondence was read from the Minister of Internal Affairs acceding to the request to hold an- art union to raise funds toward the proposed memorial. It was resolved- to obtain prices for printing art union tickets, the secretary get same printed as early as possible. The date for drawing the art union was fixed for Saturday, March 16, 1940, and all butts of tickets to be returned to the secretary by March 7. It was decided to write to various friendly societies for their assistance in the proposal. It was reported that the canvass of the business area of the borough had resulted in a promise of some £7O or £BO to date in donations. The canvass is to be proceeded with throughout the borough. The next meeting has been fixed for January 29.

BOWLING CARTERTON CLUB. Two games played on the Carterton Bowling Club’s green last evening resulted: —Champion singles: Barber beat Sorensen, 23/12. Progressive pairs: Kilmister and Callender (s) beat G. Steven and Robertson (s), 23/13. PARTY AT CLAREVILLE FAREWELL TO PRIVATE HATCHARD. There was a crowded hall at the Christmas Tree party held by the Women’s Institute at Clareville, the evening was taken up with games, community singing and dancing. Father Christmas (represented by Mr D. Jensen), to the delight of the children arrived on the scene and proceeded to distribute gifts. Misses June and Peggy Daysh contributed a character song and Mr Lux Renall, accompanying himself on his guitar, also rendered an item. Music for dancing was played by Mrs K. Reid and Misses Renall and Jean Lorenzen. During the evening Mr W. Wilson, chairman of directors of the Carrington cheese factory, took the opportunity on behalf of the settlers of the district to make a presentation to Private C. Hatchard, who is on final leave from military camp. Mr Wilson said the settlers felt They were doing their duty in extending a farewell to a soldier from the Carrington district and all hoped he would come through his mission for King and Country and later return to Carrington fit and well. He asked Private Hatchard to accept a luminous dial wristlet watch and a well filled wallet. Private Hatchard thanked everyone for the gift. Supper was afterwards served by the ladies.

BOY SCOUTS CARD EVENING. There was a large attendance at the Band Room, Carterton, last evening when the weekly card evening of the Carterton troop of the Boy Scouts was held. The winners of prizes were as under: —Ladies: Mrs Herdman, 1; Mrs Collerton, 2; Mrs C. Meyrick, 3; Mrs Townsend, 4. Men: Mr Morris, 1; Mr R. Banks, 2; Mr K. Hodder, 3; Mr F. Fitzgerald. 4. Lucky prizes: Mrs Bailie, Mr F. O’Keefe, Mrs Jackson, and Mr B. Challis. Supper was provided. FIRE BRIGADE CHRISTMAS TREE FUNCTION. Last evening members of the Carterton Volunteer Fire Brigade entertained wives and children of the brigade at a Christmas Tree gift evening. A most enjoyable time was spent by the children and their parents. Prior to the event taking place in the Fire Brigade Hall, all the children were packed upon the fire-engine and taken for a run through High Street with Father Christmas in their midst. ' While at South Carterton Mr and Mrs F. A. Nightingale provided ice cream for each child on the fire-engine, for which they received thanks from the children. On arrival back at the brigade station Father Christmas (Fireman L. M. Clark} proceeded to distribute, gifts to the children from a well-laden tree. Supper was afterwards enjoyed by all present. INVITATION CONCERT Last night in the Presbyterian Hall, the junior pupils of Miss Berrill gave an invitation concert to their parents and friends. The programme consisted of songs, recitations, pianoforte items and several sketches which were much appreciated by those present. Considering that only three or four of the performers were over thirteen years of age, and that, many appeared for the first time on a platform, their performance reflected great credit on their teacher. At the conclusion of the pro-

gramme the pupils made a presentation to Miss Berrill. Following are those who took part: Patty Rooney, Beatrice Newbould. Joan Candy, Yvonne Vile, Beverley Goodin, Joyce Patterson, Marjory Anderson, June Clarke, Norma Tinsley, Nola Sewell, Beryl Busby. Kathleen McKenna. Joyce Neilson, Thelma Lane, Keith Knowles, Billy Denbee, Rex Hercock, Colin Callister.

AN APPEAL An appeal has been received by the Carterton Red Cross Society from the Head Office, asking for bedjackets, bedsocks, bandages of all descriptions; old linen, old flannel, handkerchiefs, housewife sets (with bachelor buttons), Balaclava caps, socks, scarves and mittens. Anyone able to supply any of these articles may leave them with the local secretary, Miss Berrill. Victoria Street, Carterton. Railage of Wool. Wool is being loaded at the Carterton Railway Station in fairly large quantities, and during the past few days many railway waggons have left for Wellington with this commodity. Cleaning Side Streets. Good progress has been made with the work of cutting grass on all side streets in the borough. This work will lessen the likelihood of danger from fire, beside making the localities bear a more tidy appearance. Post Office Busy. The farlerton postal officials had a busy day yesterday. The payment of pensions was made and beside this work the mails inwards and outwards have been heavy. Personal. Mr H. H. Trapp, of the head office of the Bank of New South Wales. Victoria. has arrived in Carterton on holiday. Mr Trapp will return to Australia at the end of January. Mrs Trapp has been in Carterton for some months and will return with her husband after the holidays. County Holidays. The Wairarapa South County Council notify that the County office will be closed for holidays from Friday. December 22, to and including Friday, January 12, 1940. Red Cross Examination. About thirty of those who have beer following the Home Nursing Lecturegiven by Dr. and . Mrs Campbell and Miss Goodall, assisted by Mrs Randal Booth and Mrs Chennels, sat for thei: theoretical and practical examinations this week. The results should be available in a day or two
