RYEGRASS SEED
REDUCTION IN GERMINATION. POSITION OF WAIRARAPA CROPS. "Seed growers will remember only too well the serious reduction in germination capacity that was common in ryegrass seed crops last year and it is with regret that I have to report that there exists the same danger this year," states Mr N. Lamont. Fields Instructor. Department of Agriculture, Masterton. "While specimens examined have revealed a high degree of primary infection the final position depends entirely on the weather between now and harvesting," he states. "If the weather remains hot and dry no serious effects may be felt but since the source of infection is present, there exists the danger of it being spread by light rains or even by heavy dews. Should light rains be experienced in the next few days, there is every reason to "ear a repetition of last year’s troubles. "There is, unfortunately, little that one can do except to cut the crop just as soon as it is ready, while growers may, by sending in a large handful of seed-heads shortly before harvesting, obtain a report which may indicate the likely worth of the seed crop."
