FAREWELL TO SOLDIERS
DINNER AT MIDLAND HOTEL THIS EVENING. CIVIC GATHERING AT OPERA HOUSE. Members of the First Echelon of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force shortly leaving for service overseas, who enlisted at the Masterton Defence Office, are being accorded a farewell dinner at the Hotel Midland tonight by the Masterton Borough and County Councils. About fifty men have notified their intention of being present from all parts of the district from Martinborough to Eketahuna. Brigadier-General Sir Herbert Hart, K.8.E., C. 8., C.M.G., D. 5.0., V.D., Chief Administrative Officer, Imperial War Graves Commission in the Near East, will be present and will propose the toast of the "New Zealand Forces." Sergeant J. R. Johnston will reply. Representatives of local bodies throughout the district, the two members of Parliament, and the chairman of the Wairarapa R.S.A. will also be present. A civic farewell will be tendered the departing men in the Masterton Opera House at 8 o'clock. The Mayor of Masterton, Mr T. Jordan, invites the public to attend. The Municipal Band .will play outside the Opera House from 7.45 p.m.
