DO NOT HIT IT WELL
DOROTHY LAMOUR AND MILLAND Dorothy Lamour recently spent three days in hospital as a result of unwritten melodrama in her latest picture. "Typhoon.” A_ chimpanzee, which is supposed to be’ the star’s playmate in this jungle “epic," gave Dorothy 'a sudden shove while on location at Catalina Island, and the star fell backwards over a rock and badly wrenched her back. She was given first-aid on the set and then rushed to hospital for repairs and rest. This is Dorothy’s first mishap in three pictures with chimps. By the way, she dons another sarong for this picture, in which she co-stars with up-and-coming Robert Preston this time, instead of her usual leading man, Ray Milland. Il is rumoured that Dorothy and Milland do not hit it off any too well in pictures together—hence the switch to Preston.
VALERIE HOBSON ENGLAND’S BEST DRESSED STAR. Valerie Hobson is regarded as Britain’s best-dressed star and is certainly’ Britain’s busiest star. Within a year she made four important films—most Hollywood stars would faint if asked to make two. She made "The Drum," "This Man is News,” “U-Boat 29" for Columbia which will shortly’ be seen in New Zealand, and also for Columbia “Clouds over Europe,” the sensationally comedy which also stars Ralph Richardson and Laurence Olivier. Miss Hobson is still very, young and is almost as well in Hollywood studios as in England, she makes frequent broadcasts with Bing Crosby. She was born in Ireland and is the daughter of an Irish Navy captain. Miss Hobson attended school in England until she was nine years old and then studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art for two years. She also studied voice production for a number of years. Michael Powell, who directed "U-Boat 29,” met Valerie Hobson at a party some years ago given by her mother when the future star was a pig-tailed 15-year-old with rather lanky limbs. Powell remarked to Mrs Hobson that, if the girl’s pigtails were to be cut off, she would photograph. remarkably well. Mrs Hobson, however, had other ideas, but Valerie was left to make the decision for herself. She made her decision and has been making them ever since; the pigtails came off. Valerie was offered a small role and has been acting ever since. I
