TURF NEWS AND NOTES
CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Was Ballarat Cup Favourite Doped? STAGGERED AND CRASHED INTO RAILS (BY “CARBINE.”) Although proof will not be available until after swabs taken have been analysed there seems to be little doubt that Bankshaw, about the best-backed runner in the Ballarat Cup, was interfered with. In the centre of a swelling on the gelding’s neck was a mark which the trainer, H. Hilton (formerly of Masterton) considered was suggestive of a puncture. Bankshaw, soon after entering the race track to begin his preliminary, staggered and crashed into the running rail. His rider, O. Phillips, was thrown over the rail into the steeplechase course, escaping with a bruised leg. Even before his collapse it was evident that something was amiss with Bankshaw. “As soon as I mounted him I thought something was wrong,” said Phillips. “Bankshaw’s legs could not carry him properly, and it flashed through my mind that he might have been got at.” Immediately after it was found that Bankshaw was not fit to start the stewards, Dr G. G. Heslop and Mr C. Woodfine, announced that they had decided to declare off all bets on Bankshaw and allow wagers on other horses to stand. The stewards opened an inquiry into the reason for Bankshaw’s collapse. They took evidence from the trainer, H. Hilton, and the gelding’s attendant, and adjourned until swabs taken by the club’s veterinary surgeon, Mr R. Dowling, are analysed. Bankshaw was in a bad way for a long time, and was still under guard after the last race. He was not in a fit condition to make the journey back to Melbourne. He was severely bruised about the legs and body through his fall on the track.
Sparkle has been working as well as any of the hacks at Invercargill. The Lord Warden mare has always shown plenty of ability, but has not always raced solidly. In her present form she is more than a possibility.
An exceptionally good gallop put up during the week went to the credit of Mondello, who ran the last six of seven furlongs wide out in lrnin 17sec. the last half in 52sec. This filly is very well, and her recent failures can be overlooked when she next appears.
Wild Career bruised a heel last week and has been missing from the track, but the injury is unlikely to interrupt his holiday engagements.
Boswell’s track work is not much to enthuse over, as he is always a sluggish worker, and has to be ridden out to be on terms with any moderate hack in a gallop. The Balboa stallion is, however, in great condition, and as there are few better stayers about, he should be one of the stars in the leading handicap events to be decided during the holidays.
The stable-mates, Spanish Lad and Nigger Boy. have been kept up to their work at Riverton and both are expected to race prominently at Dunedin. Nigger Boy will contest the hack sprint the first day at Wingatui, and the open sprints later at the meeting.
G. Bulman, who has met with a great run of success as private trainer to Mr D. M. Tweedie, of Riverton, has decided to retire from the game and take up another occupation. Bulman is one of the youngest trainers in Southland, but has produced winners in Ortyx, Gold Flight, Dark Flight, and Viking.
Rodeur was obviously not. ready when produced at the Southland meeting. but has come on a lot since, and her work has been of a pleasing standard.
The unnamed Philamor —Paigle two-year-old, who is engaged at Wingatui. has been working well. He is a halfbrother to Peony Rose and is a bold galloper and sound stayer.
Race Call Pleases. Race Call (Riley) pleased when getting to the end of six furlongs in 1.16 4-5 at Hawera yesterday, after running the first half in 50 1-5. He should run prominently at New Plymouth. Starting Times for Ellerslie. Starting times for events on the first day of the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting, December 26, are: —11.45. Foxtoon should be included in the acceptors for the Queen’s Plate at the Auckland meeting. Willie Win Goes Well. Features of training operations at Riccarton yesterday were half-mile tasks by Montessa, Nightcalm, and Willie Win on the plough, a furlong gallop by St Cloud, six furlongs by The Wrecker, seven furlongs by Kilrobe, and a mile by Scold and Cymric. Nightcalm was one of the first out, and he ran half a mile in 49 2-5, and his stablemate, Montessa. followed in 50 3-5. This pair will be taken south by C. Emerson for the Waikouaiti and Oamaru meetings, and will probably be ridden by the stable apprentice, D. Corboy. Willie Win, who looks in remarkably bright order, impressed by comfortably covering the same ground in 50. He is an acceptor for the open sprint at Wingatui on the first day, and. if he carries on satisfactorily, he will contest distance events later, including the Waikouaiti Cup on New Year’s Day. Silver Bat in Good Form. Silver Bat was responsible for the best six furlongs at Hastings yesterday. when recording 1.18. and could have done better. She is in great order for approaching engagements,
CENTENARY CUP RESPIRATOR NOT TO MAKE TRIP. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. SYDNEY’. December 19. His stable connections announce that Respirator, who was to have competed in the Centenary Cup at Trentham. will not make the trip owing to developing soreness. Instead he will be prepared for the autumn racing in Australia. High Caste is unlikely to run in the Villiers Stakes here. Good Gallops. Three good gallops over a mile by Globe Trotter, Dainty Sue. and Beau Vite and Siegmund, and a smart sprint by Alunga, were the features of the track work at Trentham yesterday. They were all done on the plough, which was not so fast as usual, as it had been well watered. Globe Trotter was the first to work and he registered 1.45 with Silver River, but he was under a good hold throughout. They ran the first half in 53, and the last in 52. The gallop was an attractive one on the part of Globe Trotter, and showed that he has freshened up nicely since the New Zealand Cup meeting. Dainty Sue, in her mile, was picked up at the six furlongs by Prediction. She went slowly over the first furlongin 151. and reached the six in 28, but after the pick-up the pace was on. and she ran the first half in 53. She also came home well in 51 4-5. just breaking the 1.45 for the full distance. Dainty Sue will be ridden in the Manawatu Cup by the Masterton jockey. A. Midwood. It was fairly late in the morning when Beau Vite and Siegmund appeared. They ran the first furlong in 131. and thereafter recorded very even furlongs in 13. the first half in 53 and the last in 52, the mile taking 1.45. Both were travelling well at the end Beau Vite, if anything, a shade the better. This colt goes to Auckland in excellent condition. He has thickened out and let down since the beginning of the season, and is particularly well muscled, especially over the quarters. His connections are very pleased with the way he has progressed since returning from Australia. FIXTURES, December 23, 26, 27— Manawatu December 26—Waipukurau. December 26—Westland.
