CARTERTON
SCOUT CONCERT BOYS’ PARENTS ENTERTAINED. (“Times-Age” Special.) Scoutmaster Ray, of the Carterton Boy Scouts, is to be complimented for the very great interest he is taking in the Scout movement in Carterton. and last evening he arranged a concert for the entertainment of parents of the boys. The items showed the excellence of the instruction given by Scoutmaster Ray. There was a fairly large attendance of parents who greatly appreciated the programme presented. During tlie evening the chairman of the Carterton Scouts. Mr Morris, appealed to parents for a little more help for the purchase of equipment to build up the troop. They were thankful to have the use of their present premises as a Scout Den, but if it were at all possible it would be in the interest of the troop to have more comfortable quarters. He was sure that with a little more enthusiasm the Carterton troop could be made one of the best in the movement. The material was-in its ranks and it only required a little more encouragement in order to fully develop it. Mr Morris said that heTloped to see his appeal for assistance materialise in the New Year.
Scout Walsh, in a neat speech, welcomed those present and hoped all would spend an enjoyable time. He extended the Season’s greetings to all. Mr Keith Heid, on behalf of the parents, congratulated the Scouts and Cubs upon their very smart appearance and for the excellent concert that had been presented. It was pleasing to note that the boys were well versed in the duties relating to the Boy Scout Movement. He was sure that they would always observe the objects for which they were banded together. On behalf of the parents, he wished one and all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Peaceful New Year. A presentation was made by Master Cyril Hercock, a member of the Cub Company, to the Cub mistress, asking Miss Edge to accept, a small gift from the Cubs as a mark of respect. Miss Edge suitably acknowledged the present and wished them a Happy Christmas and a Bright New Year. The following programme was rendered: —Opening chorus, "Jolly Good Company,” Scout boys; recitation, Brian Stetfert; song, lan Martin; mystery tricks by Scoutmaster Ray and Scout Walsh; blackboard sketches. Scoutmaster Ray; song. Miss Joyce Patterson (encored); Cub item, sketch. ‘‘Eight in Pence,” Scouts; song (with guitar accompaniment), Mr A. Kay (encored); comedy, Scoutmaster Ray and Scout Walsh; song, Miss Bradbury (encored); sketch, “Three Russians,” Scout boys; tumbling acts by six Scouts; final chorus, Scout boys. The singing of the National Anthem brought an excellent entertainment to an end. The accompaniments were played by Mrs A. Patterson, Mrs K. Reid and Scoutmastdr Ray. Supper was handed round. A cushion was won by F. Avery. Belvedere. At the conclusion of the concert programme three visiting Scoutmasters were introduced to the audience. They were Scoutmasters Chalmers (Raetihi), Allcop (Masterton), and Barclay (Featherston). Scoutmaster Allsop brietty addressed those present. He commended the boys upon their excellent concert programme and appealed to par-> ents to do their utmost .for their troop. It was the intention of the executive to get the whole of the Wairarapa boys together in the New Year for a field day which it was hoped would be assisted by the parents and all interested persons. It was only by this means the members of the various troops would become acquainted with each other. BOWLING CHAMPION SINGLES DRAW. The following draw has been made for the third round of the champion singles to be completed by January 13: —Two lifers: Barber v. Sorensen: Hughan v. A. Thompson. One lifer: Stent v. Larsen (2 lives): Barr v. Callender: Martin v. Harp; J. G. Steven v. V. G. Hart; W. Hart v. Robertson. ORDER OF DRUIDS TOTARA LODGE MEETING. The fortnightly meeting of members of Totara Lodge of Druids was held last evening and was presided over by A.D. Bro H. Murrell. Votes of condolence were passed in silence to Bro R. Smith on the death of his brother, and Bro A. P. Roydhouse on the death of his father. Bro H. Bassett resigned the office of V.A.B. and the position was filled by the election of Bro G. Bain, who was installed into office by the District President, Bro H. Stretton. It was decided to purchase 10s worth of National Patriotic Board Seals. A member was granted a clearance to a branch lodge of the Order. It was reported that Bro F. C. Sunkel, who underwent an operation in Masterton Hospital for appendicitis, would be discharged today. Owing to next Lodge night falling on Nev/ Year’s Day it was resolved to hold the next meeting on Thursday. January 4. Sick pay and accounts amounting to £ll2 13s Gd, including £B5 dues to Grand Lodge, were passed for payment. The District President. Bio A. Stretton. extended the season’s greetings to members, which were reciprocated by the A.D., Bro Murrell. A Hot Day. Yesterday was the hottest day so far this summer, the thermometer at 2 o’clock registering 82deg in the shade.
RETURNED SOLDIERS ENJOYABLE SOCIAL. The Masonic Hall. Carterton, was well filled last night when members entertained their wives and lady friends at a social. A very pleasant time was spent in dancing and singing. Prior to the commencement of the programme pipers played tunes outside the hall. Songs were rendered by Mr McKinnon and Mr A. Morris delighted the audience with music on his piano-accordion. The music for the dance was played by Mrs V. J. Ashton in her usual excellent manner, and extras were provided by Messrs B. Johns and A. Morris. Mr R. P. Wakelin acted as M.C. Supper was provided by tiic ladies and was greatly appreciated. At the conclusion of the gathering the compliments of the season wore exchanged among those present. CHRISTMAS BUSINESS REPORTED TO BE SATISFACTORY. The heads of departments and assistants generally in business premises in Carterton have been very busy preparing for the Christmas and New Year trade. Many of the window displays are excellent and with the coloured lights at night are very effective. The Christmas buying has already commenced and reports are satisfactory concerning business. Everything is in readiness for the expected rush which should take place from now onwards.
