CAPTURE EVADED

WANDERINGS OF GERMAN SHIP. VOYAGE FROM NEW ZEALAND TO CHILE. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. BERLIN, December 18. The radio told a remarkable story of the wanderings of the German ship Erlangen, which quitted New Zealand for Australia late in August. The captain learnt of the outbreak of war and headed for South America. He hid for a month at an uninhabited Pacific island, while the crew felled 400 tons of firewood for fuel. Even this was insufficient, and so sails made from tarpaulins were hoisted. The Erlangen reached a Chilean port on December 12.
