CAPTURED BY NAZIS

BRITISH DIPLOMAT ON WAY TO ENGLAND. CRUISER INTERCEPTS SHIP IN BALTIC. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. LONDON. December 18. Mr George Vereker. past acting councillor at the British Embassy in Moscow, has been taken prisoner in Germany while en route to England before taking up a new appointment in Bolivia. Mr Vereker went to Riga from Moscow 10 days ago and embarked on an Estonian ship for Stockholm. A German cruiser intercepted and took the ship to Swinemunde on the north-east coast of Germany, where Mr Vereker was taken off. The official news agency reveals that the Gestapo had checked Mr Vereker’si journey at all points, accounting for the unexpected interception in a part of the Baltic that is now regarded as the Russian fleet’s domain.
