REPORTS BY RADIO
SIGNIFICANT DEPARTURE OF BRITISH SHIPS GRAF SPEE DELAYED FOR 24 HOURS. UNDER INTERNATIONAL LAW. According to a Daventry broadcast last night, the Admiral Graf Spee was ready to leave Montevideo on Saturday night, but was prevented by international law. It was stated that two British merchant ships had left Montevideo that night, and international law prevented the Admiral Graf Spee from leaving for another 24 hours. Later Daventry reports state that the 72-hour period in which the Graf Spee must leave Montevideo ended at 9.30 p.m. yesterday. Greenwich mean time. The Graf Spee is now stated to be ready to put out to sea. The battle-cruiser Renown and the aircraft carrier Ark Royal have been seen off Rio de Janeiro, a thousand miles up the coast. It is not known whether they mean to come down the coast to the River Plate or whether they will block the escape of the Graf Spee to the north in case she eludes the other warships. c The Admiral Scheer is reported to be making towards Montevideo with a submarine escort. It is stated that the commander of the Graf Spee had orders to raid enemy commerce and not to fight battles. '
