TURF NEWS AND NOTES

CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Te Awamutu Cup Won by Gladynev BRILLIANT ACHIEVEMENT BY OUR JEAN (BY "CARBINE.”) At the Waipa meeting on Saturday the Te Awamatu Cup was won by Gladynev, who scored a most attractive win coming through from the distance to show a good turn of speed and heading Balinavar. The latter delayed the start by dashing through the tapes and dislodging his rider, covering some distance before being recaptured. Our Jean registered a brilliant performance by winning the Flying Handicap after having been in an apparently hopeless position when heads were turned for home.

Good Performances. The tit-bit of the day at Hastings on Saturday was the matching over a mile of Beaulivre (Atkins) and Centrepoise (B. Stowe), the time, 1.45. being up to standard, with the sectional times, two furlongs in 27, three in 40, four in 52|, and five in 65. The pair finished abreast with Centrepoise if anything going the better. Beaulivre was in need of this work-out, as he was blowing when passing the.final peg. A Decisive Win. Having his first race over a middle distance, the three-year-old Gladynev scored an attractive victory in the Te Awamutu Cup on Saturday. Orate. Gladynev and Vaalso were quickly prominent, Orate and Vaalso going on to make the pace from Gladynev, King Rey, Bonstar, Cheval de Volee and Baran. Orate and Vaalso were still in command entering the straight from Balinavar, King Rey, Gladynev. Sly Fox and Baran. Gladynev came through at the distance and won decisively by a length from Balinavar, who beat King Rey by a head. The Cardinal, finishing strongly, was fourth, followed by Scotland, Sly Fox, Baran and Vaalso. The winner registered a good performance after being well ridden by Mudford. King Rey ran well, and The Cardinal came from a long way back for fourth. Scotland was also closer at the finish than at any other stage. The pace beat Orate and Vaalso, who tired in the straight after making' all the

An Impressive Performance. It was with a brilliant finishing run on the outside that Our Jean won the Flying Handicap at. the Waipa meeting on Saturday, after being a long way back and in a seemingly hopeless position at the turn. Brazen Bold and Foxmond reached the front early, and they set. a fast pace to come into the straight clear of Gamos, Blonde Princess, Palustre and Miss Te Koura. Once in line for the post Foxmond began to weaken and Brazen Bold was immediately challenged by Gamos and Blonde Princess. Less than a furlong from the post, they were having a battle royal, when Our Jean flashed up on the outside and won easily by a length and a quarter from Brazen Bold, who held on to beat Gamos by half a length. The winner's performance was most impressive. Suleiman was prominent early, but gave no trouble.

Sailing Lady in Good Form. A feature of the training work during the week at Invercargill was a mile and a quarter gallop by Sailing Lady, who appeals as the best prospect of the Otago Handicap candidates from Invercargill. On the course proper, about 12 feet out Sailing I,adv gallop-

ed 10 furlongs in 2.11 3-5, the last mile in 1.44 2-5 and the last half in 52 1-5. She was brought home the last seven by Jedburgh, who kept her up to hei work all the way. Sailing Lady's gallop was one of the best recorded at Invercargill for many months, and as she finished on very strongly and was doing her work well within herself she can be expected to race prominently at the Dunedin and other holiday meetings. She is by far the most improved galloper in the south and there is no better middle distance prospect in sight. Her dam. Set Sail, won an Otago Handicap, and Sailing Lady may do likewise. A Promising Stayer. Night Raid has sired another very promising stayer in the recent Australian winner, Companion, who beat a big field at Moonee Valley recently over a mile and a quarter. Companion, who was bred at Elderslie and sold in Sydney as a yearling for 500 guineas to Mr J. P. Trihey. the owner and trainer of Regular Bachelor, has been given every chance to develop, and the patient policy which has been pursued with him has borne fruit. He is a very highly bred horse, being out of the imported mare Graciosa, a daughter of Gay Crusader. and Mistrella. the grand-dam of the dual Ascot Gold Cup winner, Trimdon. His sire. Night Raid, has only one representative in the coming yearling sale catalogue, this being a particularly good-looking coll out oi Cupid's Bow, by imported Archery, closely related to a good Australian winner in Art who besides winning other good races was successful in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup. The Cupid's Bow colt is bred to be a genuine stayer, as he is by a proved staying sire from a mare whose blood lines in Tracery, Musket. Positano. Goldsborough. and Fisherman all point, to success in this direction. Peony Rose Well Treated. Last, season Peony Rose won three times over a mile and a-quarler, the Wyndham Cup under 7.2, in 2min 5 2-5 sec, with Norseman 7.13 second; the Green Memorial Handicap at Gore under 7.9. in 2min 7 4-ssee. and the Awarua Handicap at Invercargill under 7.10. in very heavy going, in 2min--16 l-ssec, Almo 8.5, being second. This season Peony Rose has started only once, winning the Flying Handicap at Gore under 3.1. in Imin 14 l-ssec. Boswell 7.13. being third. With only 7.5 to carry in the Otago Handicap. Peony Rose appears to be most leniently treated, as not only has she shown ability tn stay, but her race al Gore last October proves that she is carrying on the good form she showed last season. This mare is trained by A. M'Kav at Riverton.

Too Much Weight. In awarding Silver Streak 8.5 in the Otago Handicap, the Dunedin handicapper has assessed this 10-year-old gelding at nearly his form over 101 furlongs. He has not won a race since his rider caught the rider on Defaulter napping at the end of six furlongs at Wingatui in October, 1938, and this season his best performance was finishing second to Thermidor in the Kurow Cup. Last January, Alma, carrying 8.31, won the Invercargill Cup. with Passaform 7.1. third. In the Otago Handicap, Alma, who has been placed second once out of four starts this season. is dropped to 7.8. and will meet Passaform on 2811 b better terms than when she beat him. Silver Streak is harshly treated, especially as he has never won over 101 furlongs. Neither he nor Alma are stayers, and without taking their ages into consideration, whatever Alma is entitled to be dropped in weight he is due the same. Requires a Gallop or two. Dari: Flight was withdrawn from his first day's Dunedin engagement because his party was dissatisfied with the weight given the Nigger Minstrel three-year-old. He has not done a great amount of fast work since the Cup meeting, but it will require only a gall'.p or two to tune him up. Will be Hard to Beat. No horse has come through a more thorough preparation than Peony Rose, and she promises to be a hard mare to beat in the Otago Handicap. Her weight—-7.s—has come' in for much comment, and it would appear that the handicapper has extended her a great invitation to start. She has won three races over a mile and a quarter and it is rather surprising that both Boswell and Sailing Lady are asked to cede her weight. Cohort Changes Hands. Col fort who has been purchased by a Wellington sportsman, a newcomer to the game, is now a member of P. Burgess's stable. No Hero’s Farewell. Writing of Catalogue prior to his departure from. Australia, the ‘'Sporting Globe” says: “The Melbourne handicappers appear to have got Catalogue’s measure this year, as the old fellow goes home with only one event to his credit. No hero's farewell does the old gelding receive on this occasion. The visit was not such a happy one as last year, when he blew out all the other Melbourne Cup hopes. The expenses

might, however, have been paid out of his Hotham Handicap win and his second placing in the' Williamstown Cup. The old chap let (he stable down in the Melbourne Cup. the Williamstown Cup and Eclipse Stakes. In some quarter? he was considered unlucky at Williamstown, and there were hopes that he would make amends in his next effort; but. while the heart, was willing, the legs just would not carry him along fast enough. His sprightliness was the subject of much comment. As he lined up at the barrier the nine-year-old was as lively as a two-yeai-i.ld. and Badger was kept busy trying io induce him to stand for the start
