TURF NEWS AND NOTES
CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Riccarton Horses for Holiday Meetings TREK TO THE NORTH ISLAND iBY "CARBINE.") More than eighty horses drawn from Riccarton stables will be racing in various parts of New Zealand during the holiday season. The trek commenced this week when eight horses left for the Auckland meeting. H. and A. Cutts had plans for three of the Clifford horses going north, but Wild Talk developed lameness on the eve of the departure, and she will need a spell. It is unfortunate, as on her form at Rccarton last month, she looked certain to pay her way. Paper Slipper is in great order, but has passed his best. Great Swoop is a good hack prospect. He has been galloping well and is capable of better form than he showed at Riccarton in November.
T. H. Gillett has the two-year-old. Doria, as one of his pair. She is one of the season's best juveniles and will add interest to the Foal Stakes, a race her dam. Princess Doreen, won. Spartan. a candidate for some of the important races over middle distances, should pay his way. He has always been a good galloper and his prospects have been improved since he dropped the habit of tearing away to the front from the start of his races. P. V. Mason's pair of three-year-olds are both maidens. Stylist showed a little form last autumn. She has done nothing this season but has not had much racing, while she has been galloping well lately. Omapo has been taken quietly, with no racing till this season. A Christchurch Star writer states that he is above the average and may be quite as good as was his brother. Haerepo, last season. Dictate is now trained by his owner. M. O'Brien, whose son will take the horse north. Dictate has never looked better than he does now and should get some more money on this trip. It is worth recalling that he ran I third in the Auckland Cup last year. F. D. Jones will have the three-year-old Moorsotis as his only tourist. Though he failed in Sydney in the early spring, he has done well since he returned home. Beaulivre and Beau Vite looked too good in the Great Northern Derby, but third place in that event would be worth having, while the colt should pay his way in other events at Ellerslie. No Find Among Two-year-olds. Thus far this season there has been no “find” among the two-year-olds. Fillies supplied the winner each day at Woodville, and Ringling, yesterday's winner, added her name to the list of those who have had dual successes. Doria, Black Robe, Royal Consort and Ringling among the fillies and Kindergarten, Absolve. Nightbeam and Enrich among the colts are the only two-year-olds to succeed twice. In ail 32 two-year-old races have been decided in which fillies have been successful 17 times and colts on 15 occasions, with the individual winners totalling 24. In addition to these races, another two-year-old. Cillas, was returned a winner when he beat older ' horses in the Novice Stakes at Whangarei. Incidentally Cillas shares with Cetewayo the honour of being the only unbeaten two-year-old of the season. Both have started once only.
Winning Jockeys. Riding in his best form. W. J. Broughton steered four winners at the Woodville District Jockey Chib's meeting and displaced P. Atkins as second to H. N. Wiggins in the list of winning horsemen so far this season. H. N. Wiggins improved nis position by two. making his total 28. The following is the list of most successful jockeys:— H. N. Wiggins 28; W. J. Broughton 23; P. Atkins 20; G. R. Tattersail, W. J. Mudford 13; B. H. Morris 12; A. Jenkins, O. Evans 11; A. E. Ellis, P. Burgess, A. Messervy, R. W. McTavish, R, E. Horne, P. Spratt 9; R. J. Mackie, W. Jenkins, G. Cameron. T. Green, N. R. McKenzie, W. J. Stevens 8. Birthday Boy Develops Lameness. After galloping a mile in 1.45 3-5 on Ihe middle grass at Takanini on Thursday, Birthday Boy. one of the early favourites for the Auckland Cup. developed lameness, and he was withdrawn from all engagements at the Auckland Racing Club's summer meeting at 2.5 p.m. Birthday Boy was also scratched at 4 p.m. for the Paterangi Handicap at the Waipa Racing Club’s summer meeting. It will be remembered that Birthday Boy went amiss about this time last year, and the lameness on this occasion is evidently a recurrence of his former trouble. Doubtful Cup Starter. It is now reported that Catalogue is likely to start in the Auckland Cup. but that his stablemate, Beaupartir, may not run. Mr T. H. Lowry would prefer him reserved for the King’s Plate and Clifford Plate at weight-for-age, and then concentrate on the Wellington Centennial Cup, by which time Beaupartir would be in more seasoned condition to take on a big handicap.
