WOMEN’S INSTITUTE WINNERS OF COMPETITIONS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The members of the Kahutara branch of the Women’s Institute held their final meeting for the year on Wednesday when Mrs McKenna presided over a fair attendance. Final arrangements were made for the Christmas Tree gathering. Miss Hood’s resignation as secretary was received with regret. Miss Nikolaison presented Mrs McKenna witii a posy and extended to her seasonal greetings. The competitions resulted as fol.lows: —Best bloom: Mrs Siemonek, 1; Mrs Duffy, 2; Mrs Rogers, 3. Christmas novelty, costing not more than Is: Mrs G. Wilson, 1; Mrs Duffy, 2; Mrs McKenna, 3. The tea hostesses were Mesdames Cade, Hood, Rogers and Harland. KAHUTARA SCHOOL PRIZE GIVING CEREMONY. At the prize giving ceremony in connection with the Kahutara School there was a good attendance of parents and friends. The prize for the dux of the school, donated by Mr A. C. Pearce, was won by Barbara Beattie. . Mr Pearce presented the cups won in connection with the calf and lamb group competitions. School certificates and prizes, certificates for swimming and garden plots and also those gained at the recent Red Cross examination were presented. Messrs Pearce and Playle (chairman) addressed the children. Afternoon tea was served and each child given a bag of sweets. BOROUGH COUNCIL BUSINESS AT MONTHLY MEETING. At the monthly meeting of the Featherston Borough Council, held this week, the Mayor, Mr J. W. Card, presided. There were also present: Councillors C. R. Skipage, H. W. Cundy, R. F. Watson, J. Viles, T. G. Hardie, C. C. Kenward, M. B. Tait and B. B. Donald. The Treasury advised regarding the proposed water loan of £3200 that arrangements were being made with the preparation of an Order-in-Council which would authorise the council to raise the loan for a 20-year period instead of 35 years, on the same terms as originally proposed, a sum of £l5OO to be hypothocated, so that the money could be made available through the bank to allow material to be purchased. t The Swimming Club was given permission to use the-baths on the usual conditions. The Public Health Department’s sanitary inspector wrote asking if it would be possible for Featherston to chlorinate its water supply, as was done at Carterton, Masterton and Greytown. The matter was left in the hands of the Baths Committee to go into. It was decided to purchase £2 worth of health stamps. Dr. Sharp was granted a water connection for his property provided a concrete trough was installed. Personal Items. Miss Stansell, Kahutara, will leave for the South Island early next week on a tramping tour. Miss Joan McKenzie, of the Wellington Training College, is home for holidays.
