BOXING DAY GALE
A SUNDAY SCHOOL PICNIC. The annual picnic of the Masterton Wesleyan Sunday School, held on Boxing Day, was very largely attended, there being fully 500 children and adults present. Although the weather looked anything but promising in the forenoon for a fine day. shortly after 12 o’clock the black looking clouds cleared away, and with the exception of a heavy wind, which blew with almost hurricane force, the weather was everything that’ could be desired. The locality chosen for the picnic festivities was situated about one and a-half miles from Masterton on that admirable property of Mr A. Elkins. The dinner and tea were served out under the cool and picturesque gum and wattle grove, alongside of which runs a portion oi the Makora stream noted for its abundant supply of eels and trout. During the day visitors were conveyed to the grounds, free of charge, in one of Mr E. O. Smith’s large and commodious brakes. The usual outdoor games were indulged in, cricket, rounders, races, swings, etc. A most pleasant day's outing terminated a little after 8 o’clock. The catering arrangements were under the charge of the Sunday School teachers, who were indefatigable in their efforts to satisfy the wants of their patrons. The management wish to acknowledge their obligations to Mr Elkins for his kindness in placing his grounds at their service.
