OUR DISTRICT IN 1887
SOME CHRISTMAS HAPPENINGS IN PIONEER DAYS I Gleanings from “Wairarapa Daily” Files Intriguing glimpses of the affairs and events of days long gone by are to be obtained by turning over old newspaper files. Some examples follow in gleanings from the “Wairarapa Daily,” one of the progenitors of this paper. The items that follow are all taken from the issues of the ‘‘Wairarapa Daily,” published on December 27 and 28, 1887. They throw not a little light on' the way in which Christmas was celebrated by the early settlers of our district, and also on other questions, such as the discovery of gold, which was engaging the attention of members of the community of that time. It will be observed, too, that in I 887 the European situation was troubled and complicated, though by no means to the extent that it is today.
