APPALLING DISASTER

An explosion of chlorine gas tanks al a cellulose factory in the small village of Zarnesli, in Transylvania, caused an appalling loss of life. It is reported that the whole factory staff of a thousand persons perished, either as a Jesuit of lhe poison gas which spread for many miles or' in lhe subsequent fire, which consumed the whole village of Zarnesti. Hundreds more were killed by the gas in the surrounding district. Excess pressure in pipes caused the explosion. The fumes spread rapidly among the workers and then two containers blew up. Whole families in houses a mile from the factor}' were killed by gas while asleep. The fireman of a passenger train standing at. a station 250 yards away was killed. The passengers fled. The station staff remained, but all were killed by gas. Hundreds fleeing into the forests died in their tracks.
