AMATEUR ATHLETICS

MASTERTON CLUB LAST NIGHT’S MEETING. SOME INTERESTING CONTESTS. « There was a good attendance last night at the Masterton Park Oval for 'he weekly meeting of the Masterton | Amateur Athletic Club. Several members of the Eketahuna Amateur Athletic Club competed and held their own in the events they contested. The recent heavy rain had' been of considerable benefit to the Oval and members appreciated the easy nature of the ground. Proceedings opened with the senior 75 yards which was run in heats, J. Polson, A. Edwards and H. Sharpies filling the places in the first and D. Faulknor, D. Stratton and J. Wickens in the second heat. The final provided a great tussle for supremacy with J. Polson prevailing from D. Faulknor by the narrowest of margins. The first heat of the junior 75 yards was very interesting to watch. J. Harrington winning from S. Faulkner by inches, W. Russell, of Eketahuna, was third. M. Doyle won rather easily from J. Heaven and H. Hayes in the second heat. The final proved an exciting race with a dead-heat between S. Faulknor and J. Harrington, with M. Doyle inches away third. The 880 yards senior handicap, saw Brannigan with a generous handicap win all the way from R. Wyeth, who is rapidly returning to form and put in some telling work over the last 100 yards.

In the senior 440 yards handicap, B. McPherson was seen to advantage, running a well judged and tactically' sound race. J. Wickens was in the picture ' all the way, and J. Eastwood, the backmarker, after making up his ground, encountered a spot of bother on the home bend . The ladies’ 75 yards and 120 yards handicaps saw the same placegetters in both races, L. O’Neil] holding her own from Miss J. Grantham who finished very determinedly. The junior half mile handicap proved the most exciting race of the evening, a field of 12 taking part. From the start L. Reynolds on the limit made the pace a cracker and only weakened over the last 100 yards. The winner, S. Faulknor, lay well back most of the journey but came through with a great finishing burst. M. Wilson, of Eketahuna. was close up second, registering a very creditable performance. G. Whyborn, after being in a handy position throughout, held on to gain third place. The hop, step and jump was of added interest due to W. Russell competing. This boy, who is a member of the Eketahuna Club, is the present provincial champion, holding both the junior and senior titles.
