CHRISTMAS PARTIES
ENJOYABLE SCHOOL GATHERINGS. ("Times-Age” Special.) There was everything provided to make a real Christmas party for the children of the Dalefield School last night.when the people of the district gathered in large numbers to celebrate the Christmas season. There was a big Christmas tree laden with presents for children attending the school as well as those resident in the district. The school children provided an excellent concert programme and their work showed skilled training by their teachers, Misses McDonald and Dorgan. The programme was .as follows: — "Fairyland,” junior girls, Fairy Queen, Joan Ticehurst; Twinkle (Bell, Colleen Rogers, with seven supporting fairies and eight elves. "Cowboys,” junior boys; song, senior girls, “Brahams Lullaby” and "Pa Kare Kare.” Two country dances, senior girls; Christmas play, boys; song, senior boys and girls, "Robin Hood's Wedding;” "The Buckoo.” All the items were warmly applauded and encored. At the conclusion of the concert Father Christmas (represented by Mr Dan Jensen) entered the room from the front door and greeted the children. He distributed gifts from the well-laden Christmas tree to each child. He wished the children good night and a happy Christmas as he left the hall. Mr L. J. Fairbrother, on behalf of the committee, thanked those present for their attendance. Supper was handed round after which the hall was cleared and dancing enjoyed, the music being kindly played by Mrs V. J. Ashton and Mrs Rogers.
On Friday evening at the Parkvale Hall the children attending school from the Waihakeke district will be entertained at a Christmas Tree gathering. Father Christmas will arrive during the evening and present each child with a gift.
BOWLING
BOOTH CUP TEAMS. Carterton will be represented in the third round of the Booth Cup competition by the following players:— At Masterton: Harris, Underhill, Tucker, G. Hart (s); Callender, Bain, Martin, Barber (s). At. Carterton: Larsen, Beale, Simmonds, Hughan (s); W. Steven, De-1 Lacey, Riggs, Sorensen (s). i Shield at Carterton: Hill, Matson, Stent, Harp (s). Arrangements are being made for three friendly rinks from Masterton to visit Carterton.
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
PARKVALE BRANCH. Mrs N. Peacock presided over a good attendance of members of the Parkvale branch of the Women’s Institute held in the Parkvale Hall yesterday afternoon. The meeting opened with the Aspiration, Ode to Friendship, and a prayer for peace. Members were reminded that the next meeting would not be held till the first Wednesday in February, when ' arrangements will be made for the Institute birthday gathering. At this meeting members will compete for the cup donated by Mrs W. Hammond for the six best blooms of golden Iceland poppies, the Institute flower. A very interesting demonstration was given by Mrs Randal Booth,' of Carterton, on bandaging. Practical demonstrations were later given. Members showed their appreciation by according Mrs Booth a very hearty vote of thanks. Mrs Booth was later in the afternoon elected a member of the Institute. The roll call for the afternoon was “Why I have failures in cooking.” Members told of failures they had in cooking and others explained the reasons for the failures. The monthly competitions, judged by Mrs R. Booth resulted: Something new made from something old in children’s clothing, to be sent to refugee children in England through the Red Cross Society: Seniors, Mrs B. Renall, 1; Mrs Wadlam, 2. Best sweet peas: Mrs H. Rayner, 1. Juniors: Christmas cake, Miss E. Brasell, 1: Miss S. Rayner, 2; Miss J. Warrington, 3. Best decorated bowl of flowers: Miss S. Rayner, 1; Miss E. Brasell, 2; Miss J. Warrington, 3. A competition arranged by Mrs L. Johnston was won by Miss M. Adlam. Another arranged by Miss M. Adlam was won by Mrs E. Rose. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames W. Adlam. C. Downes, and Misses E. Brasell and M. Adlam. The president extended season’s greetings to members which was heartily reciprocated. The singing of the National Anthem concluded a pleasant gathering.
BOY SCOUTS EUCHRE TOURNAMENT. The Boy Scouts’ weekly euchre tournament held last night was largely attended. The prize winners were:—Ladies: Mrs Berney, 1; Mrs K. Hodder, 2. Special, Mrs A. Knutson. Men: Mr Morris, 1; Mr J. Parker, 2. Lucky prizes: Mrs Knight (Greytown) and Mr E. Thomas. Aggregate prizes: Mrs P. Hodder and Mr Morris (equal), 1; Mrs Hopkins, 2. Personal Items. Mrs Clapcott, of Rexwood Street, Carterton. has found it necessary to enter the Masterton Hospital for treatment. The friends of Mrs Gibb Johnston will be Dieased to learn that she has recovered from her illness and will return to her homo at the weekend.
Miss Underhill, accompanied by her neice, left Carterton this morning for a month’s-holiday which is to be spent in Auckland. Electric Power Fails. During the Christmas tree festivity at the Dalefield Hall last evening, just as the first item on the concert programme was in progress the electric power failed. Fortunately the lighting effects of the stage were worked from car batteries otherwise the whole hall would have been in complete darkness. The power board staff soon rectified the fault and the “juice” was on again within a quarter of an hour. Home and School Association. At the gathering held yesterday afternoon in the Carterton school, opportunity was taken to informally discuss ways and means of resuscitating the now defunct Home and School Association, and a suggestion was made that a meeting be called after the holidays to go fully into the matter. Beautiful Stage Effect. Those responsible for the stage effects at the Dalefield Christmas tree gathering last evening are to be complimented on the beautiful fairyland scene which greatly enhanced the first item of the programme, “Fairyland.” Services Recognised. At the Carterton District High School yesterday, the headmaster and his staff entertained members of the school committee, their wives and the ladies who had supervised the supper at the recent school ball, at afternoon tea. Mr Martin (headmaster) thanked the ladies’ committee for the splendid work they had carried out in connection with the childen’s annual ball. He said that no doubt the success of that gathering had been chiefly the result of their work. Mrs H. G. Steffert Junr.. the convenor of the ladies’ committee, responded on behalf of the committee and said that it had been a great pleasure to them to as-1 sist and to learn that the ball had been a great success.
