CENTRAL SCHOOL
* ANNUAL CONCERT. ENJOYABLE PROGRAMME PRESENTED. Those who had the pleasure of seeing the first presentation of the annual concert of the Central School last night were loud in their appreciation. The programme was undoubtedly a pleasing and varied one and moved along without, any undue delay. The mouth organ band was in particularly good form and rendered several selections in unison and in parts. Among the selections were the Polish National Anthem and "Kuripuni” waltz (composed by the conductor, Mr E. G. Coddington, 8.A.). Drill items with and without flags were presented by lower Std. 1 and by Std. 6 girls. These were precisely carried out and looked most effective. Folk dancing was presented by Std. 1 and by Std. 2. Choral speaking by Std. 2 and 3. whilst a solo by Betty Barnes enlivened by Dutch actions was rendered very sweetly. A dance duo by Peggy Bubbers and Beryl Henderson was very well done. A recitation by Beryl Henderson entitled “Going to the Dentist." was loudly applauded. The more important bigger items were a series of plays and a striking operetta. Std. 1 gave a short sketch relating to animal doings. The characters were: Story teller, June Hayward; mouse, Keith Oliver; frog, Dennis Hicks; rabbit, Jocelyn Heath; fox, Ron Price; bear, Nicholas Gambitsis. Those who took part were: Mrs Skippers, Dawn Couper; Polly, Elsie Rickards; Detective Jones, David Parsons; Clarence, Bill Finlayson; Bill, Margaret Simonson. A spectacular operetta based on and having as its theme song, "The Merry Peasant,” was very well carried out by a party of children from Rooms 4, 6 and 7.
