Wairarapa Races. The Wairarapa Cup this year will carry a stake of £6OO, which includes a gold cup trophy; value £75, while the winning trainer will receive a canteen of cutlery, value £l5, and the winning jockey a gold wristlet watch, value £lO. There is no race on the programme for the meeting, which will be held on December 30 and January 1, with a stake of less than £l5O. Nominations will close tomorrow at 8 p.m.

Auckland Cup Favourites. In the north, pre-post favourites for the Auckland Cup are reported to be Golden Sheila. Beaupartir, Flood Tide, and Llangollen, while the popular fancies for the Railway Handicap are Suleiman. Our Jean. Disdain, and Orelio.'

A Holiday Prospect. Mona’s Song, is in fine condition, and should get among the winners during the holidays.

Nearly a Record. "> No fewer than 40 nominations have been received for the St Andrew's Handicap, of one mile, on the final day' of the D.J.C. meeting. This must be close to a record for this particular race.

Has The Breeding. Isis, who competed at Woodville, is a daughter of Leighton (sire of Saxon Tor and Black Robe) and the Hunting Song—Hathor mare Hest, a useful fullsister to Shu and half-sister to Hagen. She is held on lease by Mr H. Galbraith, who also now races Hagen.

Amusing Suggestion. A suggestion for a reprisal against the New Zealand embargo against British live stock was put before the Federation of the Chambers of Commerce of the British Empire by Sir Mark Sheldon, Sydney, recently, to the great amusement of members. Sir Mark said the Australian Jockey Club should be approached by the British authorities and induced to ban New Zealand racehorses from Australia. “They should not be allowed to go to Australia,” he said. “At present they do, and they win all the Australian prizes.”

Excellent Gallop by Young Paddon. The star gallop at Te Rapa yesterday was that of Young Paddon (O. McInally), who, with the assistance of the maiden Maneroo (Thomson), clocked the excellent figures of 1.6 1-5 for five furlongs. They ran their first three furlongs in 37 1-5 and the half-mile in 52. Both revelled in the conditions and are in good trim for racing at the Waipa meeting. Young Paddon is an acceptor for the Paterangi Hack (seven furlongs) and will have to be conceded excellent prospects if.the going is at all heavy.

Very Difficult Auckland Double CAN ORELIO SECURE DISTINCTION? (BY ‘'CARBINE.”) Orelio is to attempt to win a very difficult double at the Auckland meeting—the Railway Handicap and the Great Northern Derby. If the Limond —Waterwings colt is fit and well he will have an excellent chance of succeeding in a task which has rarely been accomplished. Loyalty was the first horse to achieve the distinction of winning the double, that being 46 years ago. The late Hon J. D. Ormond won a similar honour with Renown 39 years ago. Hunting Cry won the two races at the 1929-30 meeting, the last to score the double being Gay Blonde five years ago. Many of New Zealand's most brilliant gallopers have failed to catch the Railway—Derby double and although at present Orelio is in great heart he will need to be absolutely at the top of his form to salute the judge in these two races. In the Great Northern Guineas Orelio put up a solid performance in running a second to Beaulivre, coming through well at the turn. He will doubtless be strongly supported for both events.

Milford as Hurdler. Milford has been nominated for the hurdle events at Wingatui. He looks the part to make a good jumper. Dictate Not Rehandicapped. i Dictate will not be rehandicapped for the Te Awamutu or Auckland Cups for his success at Hororata on Saturday. Josedale Grattan’s Win. The victory of Josedale Grattan in the President’s Handicap at the Waikato trotting meeting was full of merit and he displayed both speed and stamina. His record in nine consecutive starts is four firsts, four seconds and a third, a splendid performance for a horse who only left the novice ranks in ■May. Just how Josedale Grattan would have fared if Francisco had gone away correctly is problematical. Francisco went very fast over the last mile and was going on solidly at the end. An Overdue Win. The most popular result at the Hororata meeting was the win of Dictate in the H. A. Knight Memorial Handicap. C. T. Wilson was riding him hard half a mile from home, but he responded gamely, getting up near the post to cut the speedy Gay Parade out of first money. Though he had been placed, thirteen times in the interval, this was his first success for nearly fourteen months. Dictate is now being trained by his owner Mr M. O’Brien, who has the horse very well for holiday engagements, probably at Ellerslie, with the Te Awamutu Cup next Saturday as a preliminary.

Gay Parade Improving. Gay Parade only needs to repeat Saturday’s form to win more than one race soon. Self Inflicted Injuries. Metric, owned by Mr W. Gieseking. of Greymouth, and trained by F. Christmas, was put on a float to go to Hororata on Saturday, but had to be taken out shortly after the float moved off because of severe skin and flesh injuries caused by struggling and kicking. The Duel also missed the meeting because of injuries in similar circumstances. Racing Career Over. Glenogil’s racing career has been terminated, and she is to be put to the stud. She has been very disappointing in her efforts in recent months, and her owner, Mr A. Pirie, who has only recently entered the ranks of owners, decided to put her aside and look out for a more promising racing proposition. Related to Pretty Polly.

The progeny of the English-bred sire Foxbridge have been racing very prominently this season, and as the oldest are only three-year-olds his record of 15 winners and 17 place-getters in the first four months of the present season is highly creditable. Foxlaw, the sire of Foxbridge, by Son-in-law, was one of the fastest stayers in England, and the female line to which Foxbridge belongs is that of the famous Pretty Polly, as Adula, his great-grand dam was a full sister to that mare. Attracted Attention. An encouraging race was credited to Scarteen in the Novice Stakes at Hororata. He was always in the picture, and finished well into third place. Scarteen is a three-year-old brother to Vintage, and half-brother to Lady Graceful and Lady Rosette, and is trained by Mrs J. Campbell for his breeder-owner, Mr D. W. Westenra. He is to have his next racing at Wingatui, and should shape prominently on the southern trip.

An Interesting Entry. An interesting entry for the Manawatu Cup is The Buzzer, who won the Auckland Cup two years ago and has not raced since the Auckland meeting last year, where he was unplaced (as favourite) in the cup and Auckland Racing Club Handicap. He broke down in the latter event, which necessitated a spell, and when in training earlier this season he had. to be let up again as the result of a cold.

Centrepoise. A somewhat unexpected entry for the Manawatu Cup is Centrepoise, winner of the Canterbury Jockey Club Metropolitan Handicap last month. On his return to Hastings he was given a let-up, and it was stated that he would not be raced again till January at the earliest, but apparently he has done well during his respite. He is engaged on all three days at Awapuni, and the valuable Wellington Cup will undoubtedly follow for him after the Manawatu meeting.
