HADLOW SCHOOL
SPEECH DAY AND PRIZE GIVING PRINCIPAL’S ANNUAL REPORT. PRESENTATION OF PRIZES. Hadlow Preparatory School for Boys held its eleventh annual speech day and prize-giving ceremony yesterday afternoon, where there was a large attendance of parents and friends. In the absence of the Rev. J. T. Holland. M.A., Vicar of Featherston, who was unable to be present on account of floods, the prizes were presented by Mrs E. P. Cameron.
In his annual report, the Principal, Mr A. W. Don, referred to the success of the senior boys in carrying out their responsibilities as leaders of the school, due in great measure to the introduction of the squad system, which had worked remarkably well. The annual swimming sports and boxing tournament had been conspicuous successes, and the athletic sports proved to be thoroughly enjoyable. After stating that experience had shown that a boy should not leave before reaching the age of fourteen and urging parents to leave their boys at the school until they reached that age, Mr Don said the school was stronger in spirit and outlook than it had ever been.
“Even from the greatest calamities we may all learn something of value and so, I considered that we would be failing in our duty as a school if we did not acquaint the boys with events as they occurred from day to day,” said Mr Don. “The efforts of Mr Chamberlain towards effecting a peaceful settlement with the subsequent determination of our Empire to resist aggression to the utmost have provided a valuable lesson. Here in this school we endeavour to impart a training based on Christian ideals —loyalty, truthfulness and strength of character—and I consider our preparatory schools a definite bulwark to the advance of Communism and despotism. Broken promises, deceit and the bullying of the helpless, these are all foreign to the ideals of all rightminded people, and, as boys generally have no regard for the villain of the piece I feel certain that our youth has little sympathy for those individuals who are endeavouring to injure our national life. In the days to come, as they have further evidence of right and justice triumphing over the forces of terrorism, this generation of young folk should attain manhood and womanhood with a fuller conception of the meaning of freedom and with a determination to play their part in preserving their heritage; and we sincerely trust, in a world made brighter by the prospect of a lasting peace and goodwill among nations.”
