COUNTY AFFAIRS

MEETING OF MAURICEVILLE COUNCIL PURCHASE OF POWER GRADER. FLAG DAY NEXT FRIDAY. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Mauriceville County Council was held yesterday afternoon. There were present Mr E. W. Cheetham (chairman), and Councillors D. Bennett, C. Welch, A. Forsberg, A. Gray, and J. H. McDonald. The treasurer submitted the financial report, showing a debit balance of £BO9 19s. Accounts for £374 10s Id were passed. The Mauriceville Dairy Company applied for permission to run a pipe to a water line under the road from the factory to the cottage opposite. The request was granted on condition that the road be reinstated to the satisfaction of the council, and that the work be done at the risk of the company in all respects. Correspondence was considered in regard to the purchase of a certain power grader, and the matter of procuring a machine in this country was discussed, as it was found impossible to secure the one desired on account of import restrictions. The chairman was authorised to deal with the matter at his discretion.

The request of the Provincial Patriotic Fund Committee for the council to hold a flag day last Friday could not be acceded to for that day, owing to the notice being too short. It was arranged to hold a flag day next Friday, and collectors were appointed for the purpose of making the appeal. Flags may be procured in the meantime from councillors or the county clerk. The Farmers’ Union wrote in connection with holding paddocks and it was decided to refer the matter back to the Union with the suggestion that the Union should take steps to have the law amended to provide that no paddock should be used for holding stock unless a plentiful supply of water was available. The Centennial Provincial Memorial Committee requested to know to whom invitations were desired to be sent for the opening ceremony on January 22 next. The clerk was directed to reply. It was decided that a penalty of 10 per cent be imposed on general rates not paid by February 8, 1940. The overseer reported satisfactory work had been carried out during the past month and prospective work was discussed. I

The Christmas holidays for the staff were arranged. The chairman extended the season’s greetings to councillors and the staff, which were recopricated by councillors and by the overseer on behalf of the staff.
