LIFE SAVING

PRESENTATION OF TROPHY TO WAIRARAPA COLLEGE. WILLIAM HENRY MEMORIAL CUP. The presentation of the William’ Henry Memorial Cup to the Wairarapa College took place yesterday afternoon. The ceremony was performed by the Mayor of Masterton. Mr T. Jordan. The cup is for competition among the girls of secondary schools in the Wellington Province and is awarded to the school gaining the highest percentage of awards on the school roll as nt March 1. Miss Donald, the local representative of the Wellington branch of the Royal Life Saving Society, congratulated the girls of the College on winning the cup tor the second time in succession. She made reference to the good work in life saving carried out by Miss Mary Pither last year, which was being ably continued this year by Miss Edwards. Mr Jordan stressed the importance of life saving work and pointed out that the death roll from drowning was about as great as that from road accidents. It behoved everyone to learn to swim and to learn the art of life saving. Mr Jordan went on to refer to the importance of physical fitness. He presented the trophy to Pat Baskiville. the head girl prefect and to Dora Hathaway, who has taken a promin--ent part in life saving work.
