KILLED IN WAR

POLISH TENNIS STAR. J. Hebda, Polish Davis Cup player, has been killed, fighting against Germany. His team-mate, Count Baworowski. who joined the Polish army when war broke out, has been posted missing, but Poland's No 1 singles player, Ignacy Tloczynski, escaped to Latvia. Since the fall of Warsaw, where she was living, nothing has been heard of Panna J. Jedrzejowska, Poland’s star woman player. Count Baworowski. although Polish born, spent most of his time in Austria, for which he played many years of Davis Cup tennis as von Metaxa’s team-mate. He refused to play for Germany after the Austrian anschluss, and returned to Poland. Only five months ago, Baworowski partnered Hebda for Poland against the German team. which included Menzel and von Metaxa. in the second round Davis Cup tie at Warsaw, won by Germany, 3—2. Tloczynski was also in Poland’s team. The record of only two years ago show Tloczynski and Hebda playing for Poland, Baworowski and von Metaxa for Austria, and Menzel for Czechoslovakia. Hebda, who was ranked No 3 in his country first played Davis Cup tennis for Poland in 1931, and scored wins over Hughan (Holland), Sertorio and Taroni (Italy), Naeyaert and La Croix (Belgium), Stalios (Greece), Kirby (South Africa) and some Scandinavian players. The Austria v Poland tie of 1936. at Vienna, saw these men strangely mixed. Hebda (Poland) beat Baworowski (Austria), who defeated Tlocynski (Poland) —all three were team-mates for Poland this year. Hedba also beat von Metaxa.

Baworowski and Tloczynski are leading European players of long international experience. Both played al Wimbledon in June-July this year. Baworowski losing to de Ste-fani tltaly) in the first round, and Tloczynski to Charts Mohammed tlndia) in the second.

Wimbledon was the last important tournament appearance of Panna Jadwiga Jedrzejowska. who unluckily must have returned to her Warsaw home soon after. She would, have been out of war danger if she had gone on. from Wimbledon. to the United States for the American national singles championship. as she did last year and in ,1937. Site has been Poland's No 1 and a world's leading woman player for several years. Iler best season was 1937. when she was Wimbledon and American runner-up, and ranked third in the world.
