NAVY LEAGUE

FLAG PRESENTATION. GATHERING AT NEWMAN SCHOOL. A pleasant and interesting time was spent at the Newman School on Saturday when Sir Charles Norwood, president of the Wellington Navy League, accompanied by Mr Gordon Reid (chairman) and Mr R. Darroch (secretary), visited the school and presented a Union Jack, all the pupils having become members of the Navy League. There were also present: Mrs A. Caselberg (president) and members of the Masterton committee, the NewmUi) school committee and parents and expupils. At the request of Miss Edwards, headmistress, Mi’ Darroch gave a short address, explaining the origin and aims of the Navy League. He also said a few words to the children on the meaning of the colours and the construction of the Union Jack. Sir Charles Norwood, who was introduced by Mr Cooper, chairman of the school committee, referred to the importance of the British Navy as far as the Empire was concerned. He paid a tribute to the loyalty and enthusiasm of Miss Edwards and the pupils. He said that it gave him great pleasure to present the flag on behalf of the Wellington and Masterton branches of the Navy League. Tom Jaspers (head pupil), thanked Sir Charles Norwood, and accepted the Union Jack on behalf of the school. The flag was then hoisted and the pupils sang “Brittania, Pride of the Ocean,” and the National Anthem brought the ceremony to a close. Afternoon tea was then served by the school committee and parents.
