Dictate was responsible for a sterling effort to win the H. A. Knight Memorial Handicap at Hororata on Saturday. Gay Parade essayed to lead throughout and when he entered the straight well clear of Flame Queen, Dictate and Wine Card, his prospects looked bright. Dictate was the first to challenge him in the run home, and although Gay Parade still held an advantage a chain from the post, Dictate overhauled him in the last few strides to gain a head verdict. Dictate was never far from the leaders at any stage, and although requiring strenuous riding over the last half-mile, he was going away at the finish. Gay Parade ran an excellent race.
A Surprise Win. Colonel Bogey was the favourite for the Eolton Handicap al Woodville on Saturday, but after lying third or fourth handy throughout the running, he failed to come on as expected in the straight, and finished fifth. He pulled up a bit tender in front, but not sufficient to excuse his defeat. Baran made an attempt to lead all the way. and galloping freely, but over the last furlong, Friesland wore him down. Friesland’s win was a big surprise, although he had been working very well lately. Baran was being overhauled by Siegmund. The latter, last in all the early running, made up his ground 100 late. Old Limbohm ran well to get fourth.
