Friesland Brings Off Surprise at Woodville MASTERTON HORSE WINS NURSERY HANDICAP (BY ‘'CARBINE.”) Saturday was a bad day for favourites at the Woodville meeting, not one race going to them, with the consequent result that the totalisator receipts showed a decrease. Friesland brought off a surprise by winning the Bolton Handicap, starting twelfth favourite, and receiving the verdict by a length from Baran. The Friarsdale gelding enjoyed a perfect run throughout the race. The Masterton horse Serena, owned and trained at Masterton by Mr W, R. Paku, won the Nursery Handicap by four lengths. The sprint went to Flammarion. At the Hororata meeting Dictate won the principal event by a neck from Gay Parade.

An inquiry was held into interference with Ringcraft in the Nursery Handicap, but no action was taken. There was a large attendance, but the failure of the favourites was against punters and the days total of £15,910 10s was a decrease of £1059 on the corresponding day last year. BOLTON HANDICAP WON BY OUTSIDER. SERENA SCORES IN NURSERY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WOODVILLE, This Day. Favourites fared badly on Saturday on the opening day of the Woodville District Jockey Club’s meeting, failing to win a single race. With large fields, and keenly contested events form proved too tricky for most punters, and excluding the maiden four of the winners got on the list for the first time. The principal event, the Bolton Handicap, saw the outstanding surprise of the day when the outsider, Friesland, scored at odds of about a quarter of a century. The weather was oppressively hot early, but late in the afternoon it clouded over and became cooler, and after the last race it began to. rain. The track was in first class order.
