DUTY OF THE STATE

ACCORDING TO COUNTY COUNCILLOR OBJECTION TO PATRIOTIC COLLECTIONS. ANOTHER VIEW TAKEN BY MAJORITY. WELLINGTON. This Day. ‘This is the State's duty from beginning to end.” declared Councillor Purchase, at a meeting of the Makara County Council today, when the question of appointing country representatives on the Metropolitan Patriotic Committee came up. He considered that the State should undertake the whole task of providing for the needs of soldiers. “You only have to walk through the streets of Wellington this morning.” he said, "and you had a box poked under your nose every few yards. The principle of this thing is wrong. The Government should undertake all the work, and do the job properly.” After a discussion in which the view was expressed that it was a wonderful thing for the men who were going abroad to know that the people were behind them and that the Government could not do everything, the chairman (Mr Windley) expressed the opinion that the operation of the Metropolitan Patriotic Committee would not be so effective as the system adopted in the last war, when local committees showed the greatest enthusiam and a fine spirit. Mr Windley was appointed as representative. with Mrs Windley as representative of the Womens committee.
