TOWN v. COUNTRY. GAME ABANDONED ON ACCOUNT OF RAIN. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. No play was possible in the annua] Town v. Country cricket match at the Basin Reserve, Wellington, yesterday. ■ Heavy showers fell during the morning, and at 11 o’clock it was decided to defer a start with play till 1 o'clock. During the morning the only occupants of the ground were a flock of seagulls, who revelled in the moist conditions. Torrential rain fell between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.. and so saturated the wicket that play was out of the question, and the match had to be left drawn, greatly in the Town team's favour. On Wednesday the Town eleven scored 272 in their first innings, and Country, when stumps were drawn, had lost eight wickets for 107 runs. The loss of the gate takings on the second day of the match was bad luck for the Wellington Cricket Association and the Country players, as the takings at the gate go toward paying the travelling expenses of the Country players. The association pay the hotel expenses of the minor association's representatives. It was a pity that such an important match should have been confined to one day, as Country had such a strong side that, they might have redeemed their indifferent showing on the first day had the game been concluded.
