I WORK OF THE BRITISH NAVY MR CHURCHILL’S SURVEY. THE CAMPAIGN AGAINST U-BOATS. The following Daventry reports have been rebroadeast by the New Zealand national stations: —■ The work of the Royal Navy was surveyed by Mr Churchill in the House of Commons. The destruction of U-boats, he said, was proceeding at the rate ol from two to four a week, which was at the rate of the German power of replacement. The hunting craft were being reinforced and over 1.000 merchant ships had been armed. This would soon be doubled. Very few ships had been attacked in the convoys. 'The U-boals preferred to attack neutral ships. German methods of warfare were the lowest imaginable. Twothirds of the losses had fallen on neutrals. After deducting losses from gains they were sixty thousand tons ahead and there was over one million tons of new shipping being built. GERMAN LINER CAPTURED. Another big German liner of 8,000 tons has been captured by the N,*</y. It was intercepted on Saturday and an attempt was made to scuttle the ship. The crew are safe. The liner was the third vessel to be dealt with after leaving an East African port. The Italian press gives great prominence to the speech of Lord Halifax in which he charged Germany with bartering the liberty of ihe Baltic and Finland. President Roosevelt in a speed stated that it was his earnest hope mat these tragic days would give way to a happier era.
