“THE REAL GERMANY.” The December issue of the “N.Z. Railways Magazine" has a plentiful array of excellent sketches, stories, special articles and sixty illustrations. lan Stevenson, a New Zealand railwayman, jrightly surveys Germany as he saw it hist before the outbreak of war. He hows that the country was then very :ager to conserve its supplies of motor ,pirit. Various incidents gave the visitor a real insight into the Nazi scheme of things. "Christennial Capers," by Ken Alexander, is true to its name, for the clever humourist gives a merry mixing of the Christmas and Centennial spirits. In "The Witch's Tiki’" James Cowan tells a very good story of Maori magic. Old days of Maoridom are also well recalled by A. J. Sheat in "Echo of the Siege of Orakau Pa." O. N. Gillespie continues his special features on New Zealand industries with a very interesting narrative of food-preserving. Mona Gordon has a j delightful treatise on bird life. Jean Boswell skilfully presents a romance of birds of prey. Rosaline Redwood: vividly describes lhe catching of mut-ton-birds by Maoris in the southern islands. Nellie Donovan's “Little Mis: Freckles" is a pleasant Christmas story for children. “The Maori of Ysstercla.’. i and Today,” by C.'iwa Tahupotiki is in the Maori language, with an English summary. W. L. Rapley gives some welcome "Main Trunk Memories.'’ The women's section has helpful hints on holiday shopping and summet diet. W. F. Ingram’s "Panorama of the Playground." includes a spirited defence of the professional wrestlers.
