General unrest in the coalmining industry in Australia was alleged by a deputation of mining unions to the Prime Minister. Mr Menzies, today, who was asked —on the ground of national emergency—to intervene and appoint a representative committee, including colliery proprietors, to deal with the grievances of the miners and also the engine-drivers, which largely relate to hours of work and anomalies arising out of recent awards. Alternatively the Prime Minister was asked to appoint a special tribunal to deal with disputes during' the war. Mr Menzies promised to submit the proposals to Cabinet and try to furnish a reply by Friday.
