Waimate’s “white elephant,’ the wheat silo, will probably change hands within the next few days. It is understood that the price will be well under £2OO, this total covering the old mill buildings and the section of about three-quarters of an acre. The silo was built over 17 years ago by the South Canterbury Co-operative Milling Company at a cost of £l'l.ooo, but after a season's trial, during which it was proved that the wheat stored there became damp, it was not used again. The Timaru Milling Company j purchased the silo in 1936. It failed to attract a bid when offered at auction in January of this year. Rising to a height of 115 feet, the silo is the | dominating landmark of the town.
