TURF NEWS AND NOTES
CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Two-year-old Form in Auckland SUCCESS VERY WIDELY DISTRIBUTED (BY “CARBINE.") Ten races for two-year-olds have been contested in the Auckland Province this season, ana has been very widely distributed, as Nightbeam, who has scored twice, is the only one who has achieved more than one win. Four of the winners, Payette, Lou Rosa,. Happicoat and Calula Boy, were little fancied, and in consequence returned very substantial dividends. An interesting feature of the two-year-old form has been a consistency of Kentucky, who prior to his failure to gain a place in the Rakino Handicap, had recorded seven minor placings is as many starts. The first winner was Lovaals, who scored in the Avondale Stakes, and it was at the same meeting that Payette surprised in the Nursery Handicap. Queen City, third and fourth at Avondale, had her turn at Ellerslie in the Welcome Stakes, and at his first start Nightbeam won the Musket Stakes, which he followed with another win at the Avondale second meeting. At the Waikato Racing Club's meeting Lou Rosa, with only one previous start, won the Tamahere Stakes very easily, to return'over half a century, the largest dividend for a two-year-old this season. The Ruakura Stakes, run the second day, was won by the Bulls-trained Black Robe, who was beaten into fourth in the faster-run Tamahere Stakes. Phaleron won the Juvenile Handicap on the first day of the second Avondale meeting. Two fresh winners turned up at the Auckland Racing Club’s mid-spring meeting, Happicoat winning the Cambria Handicap and Calula Boy the Rakino Handicap.
With such a variety of winners, the races for youngsters at. the Auckland Racing Club's Summer Carnival, at which several high-class visiting horses are likely to be in attendance, should provide a great deal of interest. In addition to those mentioned, several others in the province have attracted attention with minor placings, particularly Grandora, and Beau Leon. Two who have had only one race, in which they were unplaced, Cheddington and Marshall Hall, are likely improvers. “Abaydos” points out that Nightraid, sire of Nightbeam. and Autopay, sire of Payette and Calula Boy, share the sire honours in the ten races. Other sires represented are Vaals (Lovaals), Foxbridge (Lou Rosa), Phaleron Bay (Phaleron), Iliad (Queen City), Pink Coat (Happicoat), and Leighon (Black Robe) v Chances of Dictate, Dictate was third in the last Auckland Cup and occupied a similar position 'in the New Zealand Cup last month with 7.5, the same impost that he has been awarded in the Auckland Cup, and if started may be expected to make a prominent showing. Floodtide’s Form. Floodtide's form this season has been encouraging, as he has been twice placed in three starts, his last being a third to Birthdaj' Boy and Balinavar. He may strip a much fitter horse on Boxing Day. Bound For Woodville. On the trial grass at Hawera yesterday Stincil (Mills) and Red Myosotis (Cole) completed an easy three furlongs in 38. At Woodville O. Cox will be represented by Friesland and Prime Quality; L. E. George by Race Call, Vai Pere and Radio Call. R. Brough is making the trip with Chief Lord. Shaping Well. The best gallop of the morfiing at Hawera yesterday was credited to Friesland (Sexton) and Prime Quality (Ryan), the pair getting to the end of five furlongs in 1.2 2-5. Both horses infused plenty of dash-into their work, and there was little between them at the finish. B. H. Morris has been secured for Friesland in the Bolton Handicap. Prime Quality has improved in recent weeks and should give a good account of himself in the middle distance hack event. Interesting Gallop. An interesting gallop was done yesterday at Riccarton by Sovereign Lady, The Wrecker and Moorsotis, over seven furlongs, the trio finishing in a bunch in 1.29 4-5, the first four furlongs be- : ing run in 50 1-5. Sovereign Lady and Moorsotis both impressed by their , work over the final stages. Centrepoise in Good Heart. Centrepoise, who looks great, has - now commenced preparation for the 1 Manawatu Cup.
