SWIMMING
MASTERTON CLUB SEASON OPENED LAST NIGHT. LARGE NUMBER OF SPECTATORS PRESENT. Weather conditions were ideal last evening for the first competitions of the Masterton Amateur Swimming Club's 1939-40 season, and to the large number of spectators present the sport was of an interesting character. Mr V. McKeague introduced the president of the club, Mr H. P. Glen, and asked him to formally declare the season open. In doing so Mr Glen referred to the pleasure it gave the club to see so many of the public present and he welcomed them and hoped that they would enjoy watching the competitions. "Under the handicap of these baths." said Mr Glen, "the club is endeavouring to foster the finest of all sports, and to provide the means whereby it may become more popular still with the general public, and it does appreciate the attendance of spectators as it is they who give competitors the incentive to do better." He went on to refer to the splendid support given to the club by an enthusiastic body cf officials who generously gave of their time and efforts for no other reward than the pleasure they derived. While he did not wish to particularise he felt that the Barnes family in this respect were deserving of the thanks of their fellow citizens for their long' services to swimming in this town. After thanking the spectators for their attendance, Mr Glen formally declared the season open. The following were the results: — Junior girls’ 25 yards handicap: First heat: E. Stains (Bsecs.). 1; B. Hugo (scr.), 2; B. Mayhew (4secs.), 3. Time, 19 2-ssecs. Second heat: E. Daniells <lsec.), 1: M. Pauling (3secs.), 2; R. Johnston (4secs.), 3. Time, 19 2-ssecs. Final: E. Stains (Bsecs.), 1; E. If sufficient entries are forthcoming in future the Club will hold events for intermediate girls and it is hoped that these swimmers will turn up in as great numbers as the boys. There will also be learners’ races when ■ enough children enter. Points are awarded every week for the trophies which are decided on aggregate totals for the season, so swimmers are asked not to delay in getting started in their respective events. Last night's competitions showed the lack of practice among most of the competitors but that will soon be remedied and both swimmers and divers will require to be fitted in future if they wish to succeed. Several newcomers in W. Perry, E. Hamill, J. Orrell and C. Haining showed promising form and it is hoped that these swimmers will continue to compete and add interest to the events.
