REACHES 97TH BIRTHDAY

MRS DIAMOND, OF CARTERTON. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mrs Martha Jane Diamond, of Carterton, celebrated her 97th birthday on Saturday.- There was a large gathering at the residence of her daughter. Mrs J. McKenzie. High Street, and nobody enjoyed the party more than Mrs Diamond. Although born in County Waterford. Ireland. Mrs Diamond is of Cornish descent, her father being a civil engineer employed by the British Government in Ireland. In 1856 Mrs Diamond left for Australia, and in 1877 she travelled from there in the Arawata. coming immediately to the Wairarapa, where she has resided ever since. On the large birthday cake which graced the table on Saturday evening were 97 candles. The late Mr Diamond died about thirty years ago, and of the family of seven daughters and four sons, five daughters and two sons survive. The daughters are Mesdames J. McKenzie and A. E. Hall (Carterton), H. Hall and A. Golder (Wellington), and T. Harp (Masterton). Messrs Edward and Charles Diamond (Hastings) are sons. A number of letters and telegrams of congratulation and good wishes were received from all over the Dominion including one from the Prime Minister. Mr M. J. Savage.
