WAIRARAPA COLLEGE

PHYSICAL TRAINING. AN EXCELLENT DISPLAY. The Wairarapa College was the scene of great, activity on Saturday afternoon last when a display of the work done by the girls during the year under their physical training instructress. Miss R. Edwards, was given. There was an interested attendance of parents and friends, but the effectiveness of the display was to some extent marred by the unfortunate weather. After the third item a heavy’ shower drove visitors and girls into the Assembly Hall, where the display was continued in somewhat cramped conditions. Although the more spectacular items suffered through having to be done inside, and several items had to be omitted from the programme, yet the whole demonstration reflected the greatest credit on Miss Edwards and her pupils. The girls were obviously keen and enthusiastic, and their control and precision of movement were admirable to watch. The English folk dance by the whole of the girls, which opened the programme was deservedly popular. The floor exercises in activity and the Swedish double work were most interesting as displaying progression exercises from the 3rd forms upwards. The Swedish double work by sth and 6th formers deserves special mention. The garland dance of the seniors was very pretty to watch and would have been even more delightful danced on the lawn in sunny conditions. An excellent item was the Tyrolean Dance by’ the Upper School who showed grace and skill m movement. The programme concluded with flag drill, and red. white and blue scarf drill by the school. This massed work, though done in much too small a space, was most spectacular. The girls and the instructress received many congratulations from the visitors who commented on the fine bearing and appearance of the pupils. At the conclusion of the display, Mr G. G! Hancox, Principal of the College, said that the work which the girls had just done was not, specially prepared for the occasion, but was selected from the ordinary drill and dancing of the pupils throughout the year. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies’ committee of the Parents' Association, assisted by senior girls. The programme was as follows: — Deportment marching, the school; English folk dance, the school; floor exercises. 3rd Forms; exercises in activity. 4th Forms; Swedish double work, 6th and sth Forms; Hungarian bell dance, 3rd Forms; skipping, selected girls: Garland dance, 6th, 5A and 5 Upper; Danish exercises, 4th Forms; Tyrolean dance, Upper School; flag drill, the school; red. white and blue scarf drill, the school.
