ANGER & GRIEF

I IN THE SCANDINAVIAN COUNTRIES. ABHORRENCE OF RUSSIA. LONDON, December 1. Sweden, whose nationals form 11 per cent of Finland’s population, has recalled its airmen who are liable for military service from neighbouring countries and ordered them to military stations, states a Stockholm message. The Swedish Government has maintained preparedness, but the public undisguisedly expresses sympathy with the attacked and hatred toward the attacker. Crowds gathered at the newspaper offices to read the bulletins. There were frequent individual outbursts of indignation. Women burst into tears when the bombing of Helsinki was announced. Only Government prohibitions prevent many Swedes, Danes and Norwegians from going to Finland to volunteer. A message from Oslo reports the "Aften Posten” as saying: "We are forced to be mere onlookers, but we can al. least express our sympathy with Finland and abhorrence of the highwaymen.” From Amsterdam indignation is reported throughout Holland. Crowds smashed the windows of the .Communist newspaper, “Volks Dagblad.” and also a Russian book shop, for which I a man was arrested. The Madrid newspaper “ABC” says the invasion demonstrates the sacred character of the Spanish crusade against the enemy of civilisation and Christianity.
